OH man…I’ve been trying to be more assertive and not such a doormat lately.
So, I was at the Grove at Sur La Table and this lady just totally cuts and stands by the register when I’ve been waiting in line and clearly a line is forming behind me.
So I figure she has to ask the clerk a question so I don’t say anything. The sales clerk comes up and says, “I can help whoever is next in line.” and the lady says, “I’d like to buy this book.”
So I’m like…”oh no she didn’t.” (in my head of course)
And so I interject and come up to the register and say, “Excuse me, I was waiting in line before you and was here first. I’m in a hurry. Sorry.”
The lady gave me quite a glare and although I was proud of the fact that I was assertive, I could not shake that glare. UGH! why am I such a people pleaser and why do I let people get to me like that?? It happened yesterday and I still think about it….

good for you for speaking up!
also, i don’t think i’m free this week to go to d-land. how about next week?
ur like me x 1 billion. but i can definitely relate to the apologetic thoughts that you get. but don’t tell anyone that. i don’t wanna blow my cover.
hi janet!! dude i totally know what you’re talking about. i wouldve just watched her cut and pray that someone else behind me would say something to her. i’m glad you spoke up!!!!
hahah good job sister! i always WANT to say something but also think…”well you can just be the bigger person and not care…i mean it’s just ONE person in front of you…” but then again, you gotta start somewhere right??
sometimes i think, ok…maybe they didn’t know and accidentally cut in front of you. But the glare?! what a rude dummy.
haha! yay jansport!
the other day i argued my way into returning stuff at forever21, even though the first 10 times they wouldn’t let me. remember, the customer is always right (even though it seems like that isn’t the case anymore these days).
also, i got a free pitcher of beer by being assertive. so win/win right?
there is a fine line between being bold and being a….. -blank-. choose your battles wisely. but yeah, you should’ve put that woman in her place. then tackled her!
HAHAHA everyone’s comments are so good and have everything i wanted to say.
i think im more passive aggressive and wouldve just slowly inched in front of her and we’d maybe have a glare battle
good job janet! I can’t stand it when people have the audacity to do something like that!! She’s just lucky that you didn’t push her out of your way! crazy yuj. The same thing happened when this girl tried to cut me at the customs line at LAX, she completely cut me off with her cart, so I took a few quick steps and PUSHED her cart out of my lane! Everyone behind me said “good job! She cut me off too!” Gosh…nobody messes with me when I’m jet-lagged!
